How to Play Video Poker

Video poker, basically, is a combination of the poker game five-card draw and a slot machine. People can play it in casinos or through the internet at various online casinos.

In a typical game of video poker, whether that game is in a casino or is played online, there is usually a required twenty five cent deposit. From there you can choose to play for the maximum amount of money possible, but that will usually burn through your twenty five cents a lot faster than if you play for a smaller percentage or the minimum. There are some online video poker games that are free and instead play for points. Casinos, however, are free of such games.

When it comes to casinos games, video poker is one of the easiest you will find. In spite of the numerous variations of rules in poker, when it comes to video poker most of the machines and online sites follow the same set of rules. Basically the idea behind video poker is to get the highest hand possible. The combinations that players should aim for are usually listed at the top of the video poker screen and they are typically the same as the hands that would win in a game of poker played with other people.

While the basic rules of poker apply, there is one major difference: In a person-to person game of five card draw, the cards are dealt first and then the players place their bets. In video poker, however, you decide how much you want to bet before the cards are dealt. After you decide how much to bet you are dealt five cards and then the basic game rules apply. You look at the five cards given to you by the video poker machine or website and decide which cards you want to keep or “hold.” After “holding” the cards you want, you tell the machine (usually this is by pushing a button marked “deal”) to replace the cards you’re letting go. Whatever is given to you then will be your final hand.

There are even some video poker machines (and websites) that will include a joker card. That Joker card can be used as a “wild” card—or a card that can be used in place of other cards to create a winning hand.

There are a variety of strategies available for those who are video poker enthusiasts. Whether you are playing online or in person at a machine in a casino its worth discussing a few basic strategies to help you, at the very least, keep your ante.

The first things you need to understand are the various hands that you can win with and what their rankings are. Your goal above all others should be a royal flush. A Royal Flush consists of the following cards: a ten, a jack, a queen, a king and an ace. The flush is only royal if all of the five cards are from the same suit. After the holy grail, a.k.a. the Royal Flush, you should aim for a Straight Flush, then Four of a Kind, then a Full House, then a Flush, then a Straight, then three of a kind, then a hand with a pair of jacks, or at the very least, a hand with two pairs in it.

How you are paid out when playing video poker depends on the type of game and what your final hand is. While the Royal Flush is the holy grail of hands, sometimes the payout is greater if you stockpile the two pairs hands.
